About
Kolkata is a city that rewards observation. At first glance, it can feel overwhelming. But spend time walking its streets and patterns begin to emerge. History sits comfortably beside the present. Grand old buildings share space with everyday life. Light slips through narrow lanes, tram lines cut through busy intersections, and every neighbourhood carries its own rhythm and character. What makes Kolkata so fascinating for photographers is its depth. This is a city of layers. Layers of history, culture, architecture, memory, and human experience. These layers don't exist separately. They overlap, interact, and often reveal themselves within a single frame. This workshop is built around exploring those layers. Over three days, we will photograph some of Kolkata's most visually rich neighbourhoods, looking beyond individual moments and learning to recognise relationships within the frame. We will focus on observation, timing, composition, visual hierarchy, and the subtle details that transform a photograph from a record of a scene into something that invites repeated viewing. The goal is not simply to photograph Kolkata, but to understand how to photograph complexity. To learn how multiple elements can coexist within a frame while still creating clarity, balance, and meaning. Kolkata is one of those rare cities where every street seems to contain several stories at once. For street photographers, there are few better places to learn the art of seeing.
What Makes This Workshop Unique?
Seeing in Layers
Most photographers learn to photograph moments. This workshop focuses on something deeper, learning how to build photographs with multiple layers of meaning, relationships, and visual tension. Kolkata provides the perfect classroom for developing this way of seeing.
Personalised Feedback
We won't just tell you what works. We'll tell you what doesn't and why. The idea is to push your work forward, not just make you feel good about it.
A Body of Work that Matters
You won't just come back with random images. You'll start to build a set of photographs that hold together, that say something about a place and a time.
